To engage citizens with the ocean and ocean literacy, our team of five designers interviewed different people with special relationships to the ocean. After sending out cultural probes and conducting a co-design workshop, we got stuck with the practice of ocean farmers in Kivik, who grow seaweed in floating boxes and mussels on ropes to understand the ocean and strengthen their relationship with it.
From there we built an interactive prototype that allows exploring the history of Kivik and the building of the box, then playfully conveys seaweed knowledge, and finally opens room for reflection on sustainable ocean futures. An audio guide leads users through all three layers of the box.
This project happened in collaboration with the Marine Educational Center in Malmö, where the prototype was exhibited during the Ocean Literacy Action Conference 2022.
